This in-home maternity session in NYC was so special in its own way – as most of my sessions are. Sydney and Damjan were truly a dream couple to work with, and I can’t wait for you to see how their intimate maternity photos came out.
When Sydney reach out in her initial inquiry she said, ‘We have floor to ceiling windows in our high rise apartment and I think the set writes itself’.
She couldn’t have been more right.
When I do in-home sessions, I plan almost nothing in advance. I show up and feel the energy in the room. The personality of the people and the place direct me in our session. When I met Sydney and Damjan I could immediately tell that Sydney was super rad and we have a mutual love of neutrals. Her and Damjan are both so chill and so comfortable with each other. I was so easily able to stand back and document their love in intimate images.
There is an unmatched realness and sentiment in an in-home session. Documenting the very beginning of parenthood in the place you call home. Knowing that little babe will be here soon, finding comfort and safety in this place. There’s something so special about seeing parents love on one another and their future baby roommate in the place they feel most comfortable.
For their in-home session, we made magic and ran all over the apartment building. We started out the session in their apartment, with me documenting their carefree and charismatic love for each other. They laid together in their bedroom, running their fingers through each other’s hair, reflecting on how lucky they were to be creating this little life for themselves- two framed boho posters on the wall behind them. One for Montenegro and one for Nebraska. Where they were each from. Now creating their life and their baby boy’s origin story in New York. Their pup Leo was constantly trying to get on the bed to remind them he was, in fact, the firstborn son, always sneaking into the edge of the frame.
They danced around the kitchen, Sydney’s arms wrapped around Damjan before he pulled her to the balcony. They leaned over the balcony, the wind blowing Sydney’s hair wildly as they watched the cars go by below. After that, we went up to the rooftop. It happened to be an extremely windy March day, and we were laughing at how cold and insane it was to be out there.
Despite feeling like we were in the Wizard of Oz, we managed to get a few on the rooftop before calling it. We ran inside for the warmth when I we stumbled into beautiful floor to ceiling windows in the media room on the way to the elevators. There was a couple quietly watching a movie in there and I felt bad to interrupt but we NEEDED photos in the corner of the media room. Those turned out to be my favorites. They were so emotional, and I was able to shoot through the glass of one wall of the building into the corner where S + J were.
It’s one thing to be in love, but it’s a completely different thing to open up and allow someone to document the deepest, most raw parts of that love. S + J did just that; they didn’t hold back from letting me tell their story. Although they took my direction on lighting and spots to shoot, they truly let me be a fly on the wall while they were immersed in each other’s presence.
They sat next to the floor-to-ceiling glass windows to stare out at the skyscrapers.
While we were watching for the elevator to go back up, we stumbled, yet again, into a beautiful and quiet moment between the two of them- they sat on the windowsill to take in the incredible view, talking quietly to each other and gently smiling. These are the types of intimate moments that I live for as a photographer.
After that, we went back up to their apartment to watch the sun go down on the balcony. It was the perfect ending to a perfect session. Sydney and Damjan are going to be the best parents to their little babe, and I can’t wait to document their fresh 48 session when baby boy makes his way earthside.
